Description: Coenobia circular, pale yellow, diameter 50–83 μm, comprised of 16–32 tightly packed cells. Peripheral cells with two triangular lobes flanking a wide V-shaped concave margin, processes very short cylindrical and hyaline, cell wall regularly granular. Peripheral and inner cells resp. 12 and 8 μm.

Modern occurence: P. boryanum var. brevicorne is a planktonic thermophilic taxon, occurring in tropical regions and warmer areas of temperate zones (Komárek and Jankóvska, 2001).
