Description: Plants branched. Leaves ovate, concave, costa bifurcate and confined to lower half of leaf, leaf apex notched. Leaf cells smooth, linear. Distinct group of alar cells. Especially, the notched apex is a differential character that separates P. schreberi from other similar mosses, such as Calliergon cuspidatum (Hedw.) Kindb. (Crum and Anderson, 1981).
